We built this custom table for a small kitchen area with stool seating. It measures 54″ long x 36″ wide x 36″ high, with a 1.5″ thick top, 4″ square legs, and a deeper 4″ x 6″ overhang to work with the stool seating plans. We narrowed the apron a little from our standard 4″ high as well to allow for leg room. We installed foot levelers in the bottoms of the legs to account for an uneven floor.
The customer was looking for a slightly darker color than the honey gold of clear-coated white oak. She chose Minwax’s English Chestnut stain, an extremely popular color for this antique white oak. Three coats of a two-part catalyzed clear satin lacquer provide good long-term protection and highlights the beauty of the wood. We filled a number of deep worm trace holes and with a clear epoxy filler. Althought the photos don’t quite do it justice, this wood continues to astonish with unexpected character, beauty, and by its great strength and durability. It’s just extraordinary.
